Alhaji Abubakar Wodi, the President, Rice Farmers Association of Nigeria (RIFAN), has called for a freeze in rice importation to save local production.

Wodi made the call in an interview with newsmen in Abuja on Monday.According to him, the need for such measure becomes necessary because rice farmers in the country have been experiencing glut in paddy rice in various markets due to importation.

Wodi said that more than 75 per cent of the paddy rice produced locally had remained unsold, adding the latest report from Edo indicated that the price of paddy rice had fallen drastically.

"RIFAN chairmen have been phoning me to complain about the glut and the price fall in Edo and Sokoto where a 50kg bag of paddy rice is being sold at N2,000 and N2,500 respectively, as against N 6,500," Wodi said.
