The government is planning to upgrade a 2,500-acre rice irrigation scheme in Msambweni District in order to boost rice production.

Regional Development minister Fred Gumo said that the scheme in Vanga in the South Coast was currently underutilised although it had huge potential.

Addressing area residents and leaders at Vanga trading centre after a tour of the scheme on Monday, Mr Gumo assured the residents that his ministry would upgrade the scheme through the Coast Development Authority.

“Experts will be sent here to carry out a feasibility study on how the scheme will be upgraded and after the budget is completed, the government will release the funds,” he said.

He said that his ministry will continue working closely with the coastal authority to initiate different development projects in the region.

The minister said that the government will soon start building a Sh50 billion hydro-electric power plant at Mwache in Kwale.

Coast Development Authority managing director James Kahindi said that the irrigation scheme had been launched by the government to improve the living standards of the people in the area.
