In what appeared to be a boost to the paddy cultivation industry, Sri Lanka yesterday exported a stock of 250 tonnes of rice to Kenya, officials said yesterday.
Trade Ministry secretary Sunil S. Sirisena said that the decision to export rice was taken because Sri Lanka had now achieved self sufficiency in rice. He said that the government’s fertilizer subsidy and the declaration of a stable purchasing price had encouraged people to cultivate paddy.
