Republic of the Congo: Progressive Structuring of the Rice Value Chain
As part of the same regional mission led by the CARD Secretariat and JICA, a series of strategic meetings were held in Brazzaville from July 17 to 18, 2025, to support rice sector development in the Republic of the Congo and prepare for the first annual sector review, scheduled for December 2025.
Discussions with the Ministry of Agriculture, the World Food Programme (WFP), and the FAO helped identify key levers for a sustainable revitalization of the rice sector. All stakeholders, including the Ministry, agreed that revitalization must be based on boosting seed production, strengthening human capacity, and structuring technical competence centers for rice farming.
The WFP expressed interest in better integrating rice into its resilience and food security programs, while the FAO offered to support seed system revitalization with a focus on community-based training in rice cultivation.
CARD reaffirmed its support to the national Task Force to ensure the successful organization of the annual sector review and to mobilize technical and financial partners around a coherent and shared vision for rice sector development in the Congo.
The country is thus entering a promising phase of structuring and strategic planning, with the active support of its technical partners.
The first annual rice sector review meeting is planned for December 2025.
