According to the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), one fifth of the world’s population – more than a billion people – depend on rice cultivation for their livelihoods. About 90 per cent of the world’s rice is grown in Asia and the Pacific region, which is endowed with wet environments that are suitable for rice cultivation.

Rice-based farming is the main economic activity for hundreds of millions of poor rural farmers in the region.
