Africa Rice Sector Update

CARD is a coalition of 32 Sub-Saharan African countries and 14 Development Partners.  We are working together to double rice production in Africa by Year 2030.

 

🌾AFRICARICE IMPACT FROM SCIENCE WEEK ”AISW” IN COTE D’IVOIRE AND DISCUSSION WITH SOME INSTITUTIONS OF CARD STEERING COMMITTEE MEMBERS 

In order to accelerate Africa’s journey toward rice self-sufficiency by 2035, AfricaRice organized an event called AfricaRice Impact from Science Week (AISW) from December 1st to December 5th. The Event is comparable to the Annual Science Week previously held but with an added focus on strengthening the link between “Science” and “Impact.” 👉 Click here to the full article

 

🌾 KENYA’S ANNUAL RICE SECTOR REVIEW MEETING (ARSRM)

Kenya has prioritized rice as one of the strategically important staple food crops under its long-term Agriculture Sector Transformation and Growth Strategy (ASTGS; 2018-2028).  In alignment with ASTGS; the Government of Kenya (GOK) has formulated National Rice Development Strategy (NRDS-2; 2019-2030), which aims to increase domestic milled rice production by 7-fold from 128,000 tons in 2019 to 846,000 tons by 2030.  To achieve this target, the GOK, county governments, development partners, non-government organizations and private stakeholders in the rice industry have been investing several resources that shall enhance the efficiency of the rice value chain. 👉 Click here to the full article

 

🌾 CARD SUPPORTS THE LAUNCH OF THE NATIONAL RICE DEVELOPMENT STRATEGY IN EQUATORIAL GUINEA

A mission was requested following Equatorial Guinea’s official application to join CARD

This mission was conducted following the official request submitted by the Government of Equatorial Guinea in June 2025 to join the CARD initiative. In response to this request, the CARD Secretariat deployed an initial technical mission to Bata in Equatorial Guinea from December 8th-12th 2025 to engage directly with national authorities, assess the status of the rice sector, and lay the groundwork for CARD’s support to the formulation of the National Rice Development Strategy (NRDS). 👉 Click here to the full article

 

🌾 INTERVIEW OF THE FOCAL POINT OF COTE D’IVORE

A country where the challenge of ‘local rice consumption’ has become the driving force behind a new national dynamic.

Mr. Yacouba Dembélé, General Director of the Agency for the Development of the Rice Sector (ADERIZ). ADERIZ emerged from the National Office for Rice Development (ONDR). In 2019, the ONDR’s status was reformed to transform ADERIZ into an implementing agency, endowed with greater autonomy and responsibilities, to better fulfill its assigned missions. ADERIZ’s role is to coordinate and regulate all activities within the rice value chain. It does not produce, process, or directly sell rice but ensures that each actor has the best conditions to operate profitably, with the common goal of achieving rice self-sufficiency. 👉 Click here to the full article

 

🌾 THE WORKING WEEK ON THE REVISION OF THE NRDS IN BENIN

After the end of the implementation of the second generation of the National Rice Development Strategy (NRSR-2), a pivotal working week took place on 15-19 December 2025, marking a significant step in revising the country’s NRDS.
