Africa Rice Sector Update
CARD is a coalition of 32 Sub-Saharan African countries and 14 Development Partners. We are working together to double rice production in Africa by Year 2030.
🌾 Senegal officially launches the creation of its National Rice Observatory to strengthen the Rice sector on March 31 to April 3, 2026
The Senegalese rice sector, undergoing significant transformation, is poised to take a crucial step with the establishment of the National Rice Observatory (ONR-SN). Despite notable progress in recent years, the sector continues to face numerous challenges, including the predominance of traditional production methods, limited access to quality inputs, insufficient mechanization, as well as difficulties related to irrigation, financing, and marketing. 👉 Click here to the full article

🌾 Tanzania’s Annual Rice Sector Review Meeting – 2026
Rice sector development in Tanzania has a profound influence on the food security of not only Tanzania, but also the Eastern and Southern African region at large. It is imperative for the stakeholders of the rice industry in Tanzania to sustainably accelerate rice production, market competitiveness and rice trading. Tanzania’s Second National Rice Development Strategy (NRDS-2; 2019-2030) aims to become a leader in rice markets in the region by increasing its surplus milled rice production from 0.4 million tons in 2018 (base year) to 5.3 million tons by 2030. 👉 Click here to the full article
🌾 Rwanda’s Second Annual Rice Sector Review Meeting – 2026
Rice production, processing, marketing and consumption of rice are deeply entrenched in Rwanda’s food systems. Government of Rwanda has formulated Second National Rice Development Strategy (NRDS-2; 2020-2030) to increase domestic rice production by 2.6-fold from 113, 880 tons in 2018 (base line) to 294,476 tons, mainly by (a) expanding area under rice cultivation and (b) addressing the inefficiencies along the value chain. 👉 Click here to the full article
